Week 4

Progress

As of this week, we have officially begun the construction of the heat pipe! This is a great step in the right direction as we now have a physical prototype of the heat pipe to work on and adjust. Other than this, the week has been fairly slow other than filling out teamwork assessment, which were ratings that we had to give to other group members based on their overall addition to the team. Next week progress should begin to pick up and soon we'll have a 100% working heat pipe.

Construction Ahead

During our Week 4 lab period, the members of group 11 met together to begin the process of putting together the heat pipe. After procuring all necessary materials, we began to fashion the copper wire mesh into a cylindrical form which allowed us to properly fit it inside of the 1/2'' copper pipe. In order the attach the copper cap onto the bottom of the pipe, we walked across the innovation studio to the its workshop and requested that they solder the two pieces of copper together in order for us to make sure there were no mistakes made. After soldering the cap onto the pipe, we decided to use two adjustable wrenches to fasten the pipe valve onto the top of the pipe, which allows us to fill the pipe with water before making an airtight seal.

Here is the 1st take of our heat pipe:

What's Next?

Unfortunately, we ran short on time and were unable to test the pipe's ability to do anything other than hold water during this week and as such must test the pipe during Week 5. After testing the pipe, we will be able to fine tune our design in a much more efficient manner.
